The aim of this project is to formulate a theory and ethics for the conservation of contemporary art that is consistent with the case-based approach followed by research in the professional field, yet allows for generalization beyond the level of the individual case. First, the project will investigate whether the model of the cultural biography of things provides a workable framework to analyse how conservation affects works of art. Second, it will ask whether the approach of moral casuistry developed in medical and bioethics can be fruitful for conservation ethics as well.
