Postdoc Position
Title
Research on Consolidating Adhesives for Flaking and Fragile Paint layers of Cultural objects. A project funded by the Netherlands Institute for Conservation, Art and Science, NWO.
Research goals
The research goal is to better understand the properties necessary for consolidation and to develop new consolidation materials. This research will take place in close collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum, Rijksmuseum, the University of Amsterdam and other partners. This research project will involve laboratory investigations as well as evaluations in the field.
Summary
The goal of this project is to investigate consolidating adhesives currently in use for the conservation of paintings and other painted cultural objects, to develop new consolidation products and carefully research their initial and aging characteristics. Despite a number of publications on this subject, little is known about the fundamental properties of the products or about the properties required for the applications. Most synthetic products in use come from chemical industry and have been developed for entirely different purposes. Few consolidants exist with known initial- and aging characteristics. There is a great need for stable, new materials. Issues of reversibility, retreatability and appearance changes will also be addressed in this research.
