The Düsseldorf Conservation Center offers a two-year, full-time post-graduate fellowship position in its newly established media conservation department. The fellowship provides the opportunity to develop and establish new media conservation infrastructure and workflows and to gain hands-on practical experience in the treatment, display and documentation of 20th and 21st century media art.
For over 45 years, the Düsseldorf Conservation Center has been charged with the examination, treatment and research of the cultural heritage collections of the City of Düsseldorf, which comprise over 3.5 million artifacts ranging from 1000 B.C. to the present. With its interdisciplinary team of specialized conservators operating in dedicated departments (Paintings and Contemporary Art, Applied Arts, Paper, Photographs, Ceramics, Wooden Artifacts, Modern Materials and Time-based Media), the Conservation Center facilitates collection care, conducts treatments, and prepares artworks for exhibitions and loans for more than a dozen museums, archives, and exhibition spaces in the City. Furthermore, it engages in art technological research projects and exchange networks.
The fellow will be immersed in a broad range of museum tasks, including conducting collection surveys and object inventories (TMS), assessing the condition and quality of born-digital video, digitizing analog video, creating disk images, preparing media artworks for exhibitions and loans and documenting identities and iterations of artworks. The fellow will also engage in a variety of cross-departmental activities as part of an ongoing process at the Center to discuss and innovate conservation practices.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Quality control and condition assessment of analog and digital video; digitization of analog video; creation of derivatives for display purposes
- File management, including ingest and metadata; server storage and back-up management
- Artwork documentation of new acquisitions, including installation instructions and artist interviews
- Conceptualizing and conducting artwork treatments
- Preparation and documentation of artworks for exhibitions and loans
- Independent research and implementation of hardware and software tools
- supporting collection surveys and risk assessment of audiovisual collections
- supporting the development and implementation of new practices and workflows
Requirements
- Completed graduate degree in media art conservation (M.A., M.S. or equivalent)
- Skills and expertise in the assessment, conservation, preservation, and documentation of time-based media art and audiovisual heritage
- Experience in photographic and record documentation
- Proficiency in relevant software and hardware tools for the examination and analysis of video and audio content
- Deep interest in R&D, innovation, and collaboration
- Excellent self-organization and proactive initiative
- Excellent communication skills
The monthly salary of 2093,73 Euro complies with the recommendation of the Deutscher Museumsbund (German Museums’ Association) and equals 50% of the E13 salary group for civil servants. Paid annual leave: 30 vacation days + 5 days of further education.

Am Restaurierungszentrum der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf ist zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt ein wissenschaftliches Volontariat im Fachbereich „Medienkunstrestaurierung“ zu besetzen. Das zweijährige Volontariat dient der Erlangung von beruflichen Kenntnissen, Fertigkeiten und Erfahrungen in diesem Bereich.
Das Volontariat bietet umfassende Einblicke in die Aufgaben eines modernen und interdisziplinär arbeitenden Restaurierungsinstitutes, sowie in die vielseitigen Tätigkeiten, die im Fachbereich „Medienkunstrestaurierung“ bei der Betreuung der städtischen Sammlungen anfallen. Dieser neueste Fachbereich am Institut befindet sich in Gründung und erfordert ein hohes Maß an Aufbauarbeit, sowohl für die Installation der technischen Infrastruktur im Medienlabor, als auch für die Implementierung neuer Praktiken und Workflows, die den Ankauf, die Dokumentation und die Präsentation von Medienkunst betreffen.
Das Restaurierungszentrum der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf widmet sich der Untersuchung, Erforschung und Erhaltung von Kunst- und Kulturgut und betreut im Auftrag der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf die Museen, Archive und Ausstellungshäuser der Stadt konservatorisch und restauratorisch. Mit seinen Fachbereichen Gemälde und zeitgenössische Kunst, Kunstgewerbe und angewandte Kunst, Papier, Foto, Keramik, Holz und Moderne Materialien sowie Medienkunst behandelt das Institut ein breites Sammlungsspektrum von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart und gilt als Kompetenzzentrum von überregionaler Bedeutung.
Das Volontariat beginnt nach Absprache und ist auf zwei Jahre befristet.
Aufgaben
- Sichtung und Zustandserfassung von Sammlungskonvoluten, die sowohl Medienkunstwerke als auch audiovisuelles Archivgut beinhalten
- Eigenständige Recherchen und Implementierung der technischen Infrastruktur
- Mithilfe bei der Erarbeitung und Etablierung von neuen Praktiken und Workflows zur Betreuung des audiovisuellen Kunst- und Kulturguts der Stadt
- Erstellung von Werkdokumentationen unter Berücksichtigung der künstlerischen Intention (Durchführen von Künstlerinterviews)
- Beteiligung an der Erstellung von Restaurierungskonzepten
- Digitalisierung analoger Medienformate.
Voraussetzungen
- abgeschlossenes Hochschulstudium der Medienkunstrestaurierung (M. A. oder vergleichbare Qualifikation)
- Fachkenntnisse zur Erfassung, Konservierung, Restaurierung und Dokumentation von Medienkunst und audiovisuellem Kulturgut
- Erfahrungen in der Erstellung bildlicher und schriftlicher Dokumentation
- Beherrschung einschlägiger Software-Programme zur Evaluation von Video- und Audioinhalten
- interessierte, verantwortungsbewusste und teamfähige Persönlichkeit
- hoher Grad an Eigeninitiative und Selbstorganisation
