Title
The Color Field Painting “Number 4-32” by Morris Louis. Cleaning a partial brownish discolorations in the fabric
Keywords
surface cleaning, Morris Louis
Abstract
Morris Louis (1912-62) was a member of the Washington group of artists called Color Field Painters. The paintings, known as Color Field Paintings, often show partial brownish discolorations in the fabric untouched by paint within the area of the tite joint fasteners legs running at the back side of the canvas. Not only they represent an aesthetic problem but they also can cause damages of the fabric’s fibres. Several cleaning methods used for textile and paper restoration have been available to remove the discolorations on the upper margin of the Color Field Painting “Number 4-32” (1962) of Morris Louis. On the basis of cleaning tests with dummy canvases the method chosen is the cleaning by suction table that proved to be a successful and especially mild cleaning method on the dummies and the object.
