Abstract

This thesis examines the maintenance possibilities of painted outdoor sculptures in view of ‘Jarin d'émail’ by Jean Dubuffet in the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum (The Netherlands). This sculpture is composed of concrete and epoxy resin with a black and white paint layer. The work is accessible to visitors. The examination of artist's intent, technology, history of conservation/restoration and the current condition form the basis for the development of a treatment proposal. The main focus of this thesis lies in the handling of the paint layer. Several paint mediums for outdoor conditions will be introduced and verified for the use on the Jardin d'émail.
