With art in architecture, that is Kunst am Bau, architecture and fine art meet face to face. Through their mutual influence and dialogue with each other, they shape the surrounding space — at times subtly, at others conspicuously — either as an integral part of the building or independently in the interior and exterior. This dynamic relationship is what makes art in architecture a unique and especially challenging terrain, not only for the artists but also for those who are charged with the realization and preservation of the artworks.

"Kunst am Bau. Zustände, Erhalt und Vermittlung" is the first comprehensive work to navigate these site-specific objects. They are revealed as far more than standalone art objects: they also reflect the zeitgeist and their architectural environment. Alongside an introduction to their cultural-historical significance, selection process, and realization, the book provides an overview of quintessential shifts in art in architecture over time, concluded by depictions of preservation strategies and approaches to mediation that far transcend the field of study.
