Workshop: Compensation for Loss in the Conservation of Photographic Materials

The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation (FAIC) presents the Compensation for Loss in the Conservation of Photographic Materials workshop, April 16 - 20, 2018, instructed by James Bernstein, Debra Evens, and Victoria Binder.

 

Utilizing the world-renowned collections and the photograph conservation facilities of the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, this five-day course will investigate compensation techniques employed in the conservation of damaged and deteriorated historic and contemporary photographic prints. Demonstrations of techniques will be carried out by experienced conservators and innovators in the field. A wide range of inpainting media will be available for experimentation.  Intensive laboratory sessions will be dedicated to hands-on work with a variety of compensation challenges. Topics to be addressed in lecture and practice include ethics; color and light theory; inpainting media and techniques; inserting methods for losses in photographic paper, including digital fills; isolating layers; and work space design. Compensation issues with a wide variety of photographic processes from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries will be examined during the week.

The application requires a statement addressing the selection criteria (qualification for participation, demonstrated need/relevance to learn workshop content, opportunity to disseminate information gained) and a CV/resume. Application review will begin November 1 and continue until the course is filled. Notifications expected by November 15. No payment is required to apply. Payment is due only after acceptance to the program. Scholarships are available for international participants.
