Seminar Modern Art Conservation in practice:

Different Ways of Decision-making for the Conservation of Modern and Contemporary Art by  Lydia Beerkens

This three-day seminar focuses on the theory and practice in conservation of modern and contemporary art, a relatively new specialisation  within the field of art conservation. The seminar will discuss major themes such as decision making,  ethics and aesthetics, the role of the artist through a varied selection of cases from the  studio practice including topics as plastics conservation, preservation of Installation Art,  The Artist Interview as a tool, and conservation  approaches for Arte Povera, Zero artworks and  Outdoor Painted Sculptures.

Lectures:

New materials in art after 1900

Development of the new specialisation

Decision making and new strategies

Major issues in ethics and aesthetics

Guidelines for daily practice

 

Platform discussion on conservation issues

 

Practical session:

Treatment options for plastics and/or The Artist Interview as a new tool

Visit to a the studio of a local artist.

 

The seminar will be lead by Dr. Lydia Beerkens,  Senior Conservator Modern and Contemporary Art at SRAL. Lydia Beerkens is a leading researcher and  practitioner in modern art conservation, and has worked in this field for museum and corporate  collections for 20 years now. She teaches and publishes internationally and has earned her PhD in 2012 at the Radboud University in Nijmegen.

Who can participate:

There will be 18-20 places available for:

Young and Mid-career conservators in modern art  conservation.

Collection managers and Curators in Contemporary Art.

Call for case-studies:

The participants are welcomed to bring in case-studies from their own practice to be

discussed during the platform session on  conservation issues.

 

The language of the Seminar will be English.

Maximum participants: 18 - 20

Costs: EUR 550,-

Seminar fees will include lunches.

 

Registration requests should be sent to k.seymour@sral.nl by 20th March 2017. Applicants  will need to submit a short CV and covering letter explaining why they should be selected. Candidates will be selected on relevance of their daily working practice in the field of modern art conservation. Candidates will be informed by 31st March 2017 of their place.
