McKay Lodge Conservation Laboratory, Inc. of Oberlin, Ohio is soliciting applications for additional Sculpture Conservation Assistants. Any assistant’s tasks would largely be participation along with our other assistants and company conservators in the work of performing maintenance and treatments for outdoor sculpture, public art, monuments, fountains, mosaics, and architectural features. The ideal candidate would have a degree in fine art, knowledge of sculpture materials and techniques, art foundry or fabrication experience, and possess many of the following skills and abilities: metalworking including various means of welding; soldering; other joining techniques and finishing; fabrications in various metals, wood and other materials; work with stone, cements and mortars; fine spray finishing and applications of industrial coatings; abrasive blasting; operation of common power tools; operation of forklifts and aerial lifts; driving trucks with trailers; basic rigging; work at heights by climbing of ladders and scaffolding; and lifting of up to 75 pounds. In addition, the candidate must be capable of passing a federal background check as we oftentimes work in secured federal facilities. Much of the work is outdoors in seasonal weather and work in our shops in winter and other times. The candidate must be capable of extensive travel throughout the United States with occasional weeklong periods away. Our contracts take us to all states in the contiguous United States, as well as Alaska, Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands, to repair and preserve some of the finest works of art and architectural features dating from the 19th century to the most recent commissions in public art.
