A selection of artworks in the collections of large museums in Portugal and Spain will be documented in order to preserve these works for the future. The project begins with the review of existing material (published and unpublished) about the artists to be studied: articles by art critics and art historians, interviews and writings of artists themselves. It then proceeds with the field work: interviews with authors and other stakeholders in the creation or initial presentation of the works, in conjunction with photo and video documentation of the process of installing them. The data collected will produce written and visual documentation necessary for adequate preservation and future re-presentation of the works that will be made available to the museums where they belong.
The project will focus on the following types of artworks:
• installations that include multiple objects, unconventional materials, technology and an intangible dimension,
• moving image works, including film, video and slide projections, that are susceptible to obsolescence of technology and demand specific conditions for storage and display. Project dates are: January 2011 – July 2013
