Dear INCCA Community,
Greetings to you all. Our November starts with a recap of the sixth INCCA Student Café, hosted on the 23rd of October 2025, which focused on the long-term preservation challenges posed by time-based media artworks. Continuing the initiative to support emerging professionals, all speakers received one-on-one mentoring with members of the INCCA Steering Committee in advance to help them refine their presentations.
The first presentation by Isobel Finlay discussed the treatment of David (2004) by Sam Taylor-Johnson. Bird Nord followed with a practical presentation on the maintenance of CRT-based video installations, offering a toolkit of diagnostic and minor repair procedures to support conservators working with ageing display technologies. Chang Lan explored the preservation of obsolete multimedia artworks, using Blonde (1998) by Joy Gregory as a case study. Mariana Passos then presented her research on Dara Birnbaum's Kiss the Girls: Make Them Cry (1979), followed by Miriam Chair who examined approaches to exhibiting analogue film through the example of Craneway Event (16mm) by Tacita Dean. Olivia Schoenfeld concluded the session with her research on disk imaging for computer-based artworks, focusing on Brody Condon's DeRezFX.Kill(KarmaPhysics<Elvis)(2004–2006). The presentations were followed by a Q&A and open discussion with 67 attendees. English live captions and AI Portuguese translation were made available throughout the event to ensure accessibility for all attendees. Read more about the speakers here and more about the Café here.
We are proud to share that two of our Steering Committee members presented and contributed to research at the Future Talks 025 From failure to success Innovative case studies in the conservation of the modern conference in Munich. Rachel Rivenc presented Preserving a crumbling reliquary of California Feminism alongside Melissa Huddleston, BJ Farrar and Ann Svenson, and Tom Learner contributed to German democratic plastics in design: A research project on material, technology, and conservation with colleagues from Die Neue Sammlung, the Getty Conservation Institute, TH Köln and the Wende Museum.
Please keep an eye out for the many new opportunities and events posted on incca.org. We look forward to seeing you in the INCCA community.
All the very best,
