In November 2024, INCCA Korea members visited the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa. The museum staff warmly welcomed the 11 members from Korea, with Yumiko Tatematsu graciously organizing a meeting to discuss some key conservation challenges in contemporary art. She shared insights into how the museum, in collaboration with the artist, addressed the degradation of the polyurethane film in Lee Bul’s Apparition (2001). The discussions centered on their decision-making process, including the partial re-fabrication of the artwork, as well as broader topics such as artist interviews, the complexities of contemporary materials, and the conservation of light-based art.
The day concluded with a delightful dinner alongside the museum's curators, where conversations continued in a relaxed and collegial atmosphere. Such gatherings remain rare for professionals focused on the conservation of Asian contemporary art, making this meeting an invaluable opportunity for networking and collaboration. This visit marked the beginning of an emerging network, setting the stage for meaningful partnerships in the future.
A heartfelt thank you to the 21st Century Museum for their warm hospitality and inspiring exchange!
