Sanneke Stigter

Last month, we said goodbye to our long-serving Steering Committee member Sanneke Stigter. Sanneke has been an important part of the INCCA community for years, helping to pioneer many important projects such as the Revisiting Artist Interviews Series, a project she continues to participate in. She frequently contributed to INCCA's Mentoring Programme, encouraging the next generation of contemporary conservators, as well as establishing important relationships between INCCA and Dutch institutions such as the SBMK to foster new opportunities for the INCCA community. We will miss her presence on the Steering Committee but look forward to seeing her continue to participate in the INCCA community in future.

"I am sorry to be leaving the INCCA board, and would like to thank all current and previous INCCA-board members for their continuous inspiration and support to the field. It's lovely to stay in touch about topics dear to my heart."

Sanneke is an Assistant Professor in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) where she set up the specialisation of Contemporary Art since 2007. She studied Art History at the UvA and Modern Art Conservation at the SRAL (cum laude), and has had a successful career as a contemporary art conservator at various collections and museums in the Netherlands. She headed the Conservation Department of Contemporary Art and Modern Sculpture at the Kröller-Müller Museum for nearly eight years, where she also curated several exhibitions on art conservation. In 2016 she was awarded a PhD on her dissertation 'Between Concept and Material. Working with Conceptual Art: A Conservator's Testimony'. She takes part in various advisory boards and has been involved in many research projects devoted to the conservation of contemporary art, including Inside InstallationsPRACTICs and NACCA, and as principal investigator of various research projects on Oral History in conservation research, directing UvA's Interviews in Conservation Initiative.

Sanneke continues to contribute to the field of conservation, with research interests in conservation theory, museum practice, oral history and artist interviews and a special focus on installation art, photoworks, and conceptual art, having published on these topics widely. She feels strongly about societal relevance, develops cross-disciplinary courses and teaches BA, MA and PhD students in Conservation, Curatorial Studies and Artistic Research.
