Abstract
This thesis concerns the study and conservation of a contemporary painting, by Carlos Calvet a Portuguese artist, (1928 - ) which belongs to the Collection of the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Lisbon, Portugal. Several interviews with the artist have been conducted to gain detailed information on his choice of materials, techniques, as well as his awareness of conservation issues and attitude toward future conservation treatments. Simultaneously, a technical study has been carried away using ultraviolet fluorescence, infrared reflectography, x-ray and transmitted light for structural analyses; EDXRF, polarizing microscopy, FTIR and EDXRD for materials analyses.
The project has two objectives, to find a conservation solution that would preserve the painting without disregarding the artist`s intent and to gather data on the artist`s painting techniques and materials, and determine its significance to the meaning of the work.
