Conservation Fellowships 2013/2014
Conservation Center
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art
The Conservation Center at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is seeking applications for two IMLS grant funded positions to help inventory the museum's photographic and time-based media collections. The positions are full-time for one year beginning November 1, 2013. The salary is $32,000 per year plus benefits.
Eligibility: Candidates will be considered who have graduated from a recognized conservation training program with a specialization in photographic materials or who have equivalent education and work/life experience demonstrating expertise in the analysis, documentation, conservation and preventive care for all types of photographic materials. The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of the history of photography, the evolution of historic and contemporary photographic techniques, and skill in the use of non-destructive analytical techniques for the examination of photographs.
Project Scope: The inventory will be conducted under the direction of Mark Gilberg (Director, Conservation Center), Britt Salvesen (Department Head and Curator of Photography), and Janice Schopfer (Head, Paper Conservation Laboratory) in collaboration with staff from various museum departments including conservation, registration, curatorial, and collections management. This project will 1) update the data associated with each object in the collection including accurate identification of the photographic process based on accepted terminology, 2) assess condition and housing, 3) develop protocols for accessing and handling the collection, and 4) invite public engagement with programs related to conservation and collections management. In addition to the inventory's emphasis on the photographic collections, the project team will work in tandem with LACMA's existing Time-Based Media Committee to address the emerging needs related to acquiring, processing, housing, and storing time-based media objects, including film/video/slide/digital projections and sound installations.
Application Procedure: Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, resume, and two letters of reference. All application materials should be addressed to
