The talks will include an investigation into the effects of painted surfaces on the degradation and consolidation of polyurethane (PUR) foam, a case study on Karla Black’s large-scale polythene, plaster powder, chalk dust, and chalk sculpture 'Contact Isn’t Lost' (2008), and technological research on Jonasz Stern’s canvas and organic material compositions, focusing on his use of bones, fishbones, feathers, and plant residues. This will be followed by a summary of PhD research on ephemeral and, sensory installations made with organic materials, in which time works as a material, concluding with a case study on the conservation of two artworks by Christian Boltanski and Joseph Beuys, both of which are partially made of edible materials which cannot be replaced. The talks will be followed by an open and informal conversation with all speakers and participants about how the choice of the artist’s materials impacts and influences the conservation of these works.
