Basis Wien is a documentation centre, archive and the most extensive database on contemporary art in and from Austria in national as well as international context. Materials on art production, presentation and reception are compiled in analogue and digital form and made generally accessible as an online database.
The data holdings collect artists’ biographies, art institutions and their activities, exhibitions, events information, press reactions and publications. Text and image material can in many cases be read and viewed online. Since the beginning of 2004, data on more than 25,000 people, 7,000 institutions and 20,000 exhibitions/projects and objects (pictures, exhibition folders, books etc.) has been available online.
The most topical events and information are continuously being incorporated. The complex linking of all the data produces a dynamic picture of the manifold production connections in Austrian artistic life since 1945.
