Abstract

This thesis aims to investigate if and how RFID-technology can be used as identification system and for collection management in a museum environment. Main focus is placed on possibilities, requirements and limits for attaching Smart Labels to objects of art. 30 Objects of the collection of the Museum Ludwig (Cologne) were selected in order to examine how and where Smart Labels could be attached, which size they may have and which minimum detection/reading range they must have. Attachment tests with Smart Labels were carried out on different dummy-objects and several alternative attaching methods were developed. The results of these tests and examinations were adopted for developing a positioning scheme and to establish requirements for the use of Smart Labels on artifacts from museums` and conservators` points of view.
