M+ is looking for an Associate Conservator, Time-based Media to join our talented and diverse Conservation team in Hong Kong.

M+ is a museum dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Located in Hong Kong’s WestK, we are one of the leading museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world. You will be responsible for:
• Assess and document the condition of time-based media (TBM) artworks;
• Propose and execute conservation treatments to ensure the long-term stability of analog, digital, and software-based works;
• Develop strategies to address obsolescence, ensuring future accessibility for digital formats, software-based artworks, and media installations;
• Prepare TBM artworks for exhibitions, loans, and acquisitions, ensuring proper storage and transport;
• Install TBM artworks and obsolescent equipment for display or loan;
• Engage with curators, registrars, and legal teams on the care, display, and acquisition of media artworks;
• Collaborate with Digital and IT departments to maintain digital repositories for artworks and archival assets;
• Assist in workflows, policies, and protocols for cataloguing, storage, and documentation of TBM collections;
• Assist in auditing the collection periodically to address preservation needs and format obsolescence;
• Conduct research on the materials, technologies, and techniques used by artists;
• Collaborate with internal departments and external vendors to implement effective conservation practices;
• Collaborate with museum staff in the handling, installation, and care of TBM artworks;
• Integrate research findings into conservation strategies and participate in professional conferences;
• Assist with establishing and maintaining the TBM conservation laboratory; and
• Undertake other duties as needed to support conservation and operational goals.

You should:
• possess a Master’s degree in conservation, with a specialization in time-based media, digital art, or equivalent experience;
• have at least 3 years of practical experience working with digital and media artworks in a museum or cultural institution; candidates with less experience may be considered for an assistant-level role;
• demonstrate knowledge of conservation strategies for film, video, software, and web-based art;
• have experience with diagnostic tools for documenting and treating media artworks;
• be familiar with coding languages and a willingness to develop new technical skills;
• have knowledge of modern and contemporary art, architecture, and design;
• have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment;
• demonstrate strong collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills;
• be able to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; and
• have strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills in English; knowledge of Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin) is advantageous but not required.
