Call for Submission to the journal
Les Cahiers du Numérique (http://lcn.revuesonline.com)
Special issue on the Preservation of digital cultural artifacts
Submission deadline : 15/04/2012

Theme : Information and Communication Science and Technology

Objective : This special issue of Les Cahiers du Numérique questions the relationship between digital objects and artistic creation processes, and raises the issue of sustainability of artistic works involving technological components. This relationship requires to re-conceptualize technological tools as well as social and artistic practices, in order to aim at the preservation of digital cultural artifacts for re-production and re-performance.

This special issue seeks to shape the future direction for research in France and worldwide, on the following research questions:

Which are the relevant preservation strategies for the repertoire of works involving technological components, and especially digital components? Which relationships may be established between technologies and artistic creation processes? How to document and archive interactions between various actors of the creative process (artists, technical assistants, technological tools, etc.)? How can knowledge be captured and transmitted for re-production purposes? Which methodological and epistemological links can be established between information science and other fields of research (e.g. sociology of science, music research, museum studies, etc.) in order to address these issues in various artistic contexts?

The goal of this special issue is to shed light on various aspects of the preservation of digital cultural artifacts. Submissions may address theoretical considerations as well as case studies on artistic practices with a focus on the usage of technological means, documentation and archival methodologies. This call primarily targets the information science community, but we also invite interdisciplinary approaches spanning various research fields in humanities and social sciences as well as engineering and natural sciences. Submissions by practitioners in terms of know-how transmission are also welcome.

In this issue we will consider the following themes (non-exhaustive list):
-     Preservation strategies
-     Digital data archival
-     Documentation methodology for individual as well as collective artistic practices
-     The digital record lifecycle
