2008 Symposium 'The making of Victory Boogie Woogie'

Posted on Wed, 10/29/2008 - 15:08

Gemeentemuseum Den Haag
29th August 2008

The Dutch state acquired - in 1998 - Victory Boogie Woogie (VBW) , the last painting by Piet Mondrian. Recently the painting, part of the collection of the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage (ICN) and on permanent loan at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, was extensively investigated.

On August 29, 2008 the results of this examination will be presented to an international audience.

During a one day meeting, the integrated approach to the research of this painting will be presented. The genesis of the painting in all its intensely varied aspects, based on historical sources such as letters, diaries, reports, magazine-articles and photographs will be discussed.  A detailed overview will be given of the conservation and restoration history and the reception of the painting. In addition, a review of the scientific work with respect to the transatlantic paintings will be given as well. The scientific research devoted to the Victory Boogie Woogie includes non-destructive analysis by the MOLAB team from EU-Artech, material analysis and microscopic observations. Based on these results, we like to discuss different reconstructed phases of the painting.

The meeting, financially supported by EU-Artech, will be jointly organised by the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage and the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.

Registration for the meeting is free and will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Participation is limited to 150 persons. Please send your registration to: angeniet.boeve@icn.nl mentioning your name and title, institution and address, e-mail and phone number.
