Title
Research of the causes for „liquid oil paint films“ in contemporary art paintings - Evaluation of possible conservation methods using the example of “Harvest” (1993) by Otto Piene
Keywords
Non-drying oil paint, liquid, liquefying oil paint, Piene
Abstract
The thesis studies the phenomenon of non-drying oil paint in contemporary paintings. Research focuses on the canvas painting “Harvest” (1993) by Otto Piene, in which a liquefying process occured in white oil paint. After the paint had dried for years it created long sticky drips within several months. It is one of many cases in contemporary art, where liquefying oil paint has been observed. The phenomenon has been described with an eager and growing interest by both artists and conservators, but neither possible reasons nor satisfying conservation treatments could be proposed so far. The main emphasis of this investigation is therefore to examine and evaluate possible conservation methods for the treatment of these structural changes.
