Abstract
In 1982 the American artist Tom Otterness created “The Kingsparade”, a concrete frieze that adorns the façade of the König bookshop in Cologne, Germany. Weathering and the characteristics of the materials that were used have generated specific damage that has resulted in a salt contamination. Furthermore the contamination and cracks in the art work have caused the paint cover to break up. As well as an art historical classification of “The Kingsparade”, its present condition will be examined and the damage and causes of this will be analyzed. The results should provide a foundation for the preparation of a concept to provide both restoration and conservation. The focal points involve the trial of suitable materials and methods for a desalination, attempts to fill in the cracks and the application of a new paint layer to the frieze.
